Sony Kurian has been a grocery person all his life. And he is really proud of that. He started his career in India working with Nestle India Ltd, way back in 1993. He was a highly respected and recognized professional even from his initial days. And was given many challenging projects to handle, which he successfully did. He has implemented the revolutionary concept of utilizing the hanging basket for Maggi Noodles display in Kerala. He also pioneered the establishment of exclusive distributors for the Chocolate and Confectionery business of Nestle, which eventually paved the way for Nestle getting the ground laid for building up their strong brands beginning with the launch of KitKat. In 2003, he decided to pursue a challenging life abroad by deciding to immigrate to Canada.
After landing in Canada in 2003 in Toronto, he joined Sam’s Club, the wholesale club format of Walmart. He was instrumental in building up the strong marketing team at the Sam’s Club in Cambridge, ON. He worked with Sam’s Club for almost 2 years and set a record signing up 95% of the businesses in the Tri Cities -Kitchener, Cambridge, Waterloo- as Sam’s Club members.
In 2005, he moved on to Unilever Canada as their Regional Sales Manager for Western Canadian business in the fastest growing Ethnic Business Unit. Relentlessly in pursuit of newer opportunities, he has convinced major chains to introduce the ethnic category in their aisles, which eventually proved to be very successful. He was also the person behind Unilever’s foray into the round tea bags, which very soon became the No 1 SKU in the tea category not just in Western Canada, but in the Eastern provinces as well.
Bitten by the entrepreneurial bug, he quit Unilever and started the first South Indian grocery store in BC in the year 2009 by opening Surabhi Store in Surrey. The store started offering exclusive products flown in from Kerala and soon had a selection you could not find anywhere else. It became and continues to be the destination store for anything South Indian.
In 2003, he decided to hand over the reins of the retail business to his wife Biji Kurian and get back into wholesale. He started SG International Trading Inc. and started bringing a whole range of products from India to sell to the Indian and mainstream stores in Western Canada. He is known and respected for his commitment to business and his honest approach to customers. He has picked up distribution rights for reputed brands including Unilever besides developing his own private labels which have gone national over a period of time.
Sensing the exploding opportunity in the US, he has expanded his operations to the US Northwest with a base in Bellingham and is servicing the major Indian retailers in Washington and Oregon states. To ensure that he keeps up with the latest in business, he has also set up an online platform for his retail store as well as listed a significant range of products in Amazon.ca and is soon launching the products in Amazon.com too.
With The Go To Market Company Inc. Sony wishes to build up a sustainable business sourcing “Good For You” products from around the globe and selling them to the Canadian and US consumers.
